Two Strike Drill
I will use this drill to conclude a positive team hitting session. It is a very fun drill that the girls really like to do.
Have all the players get a bat, helmet, and batting gloves etc.. I get a full bucket of balls in the circle. You can either pitch or use a machine. Sports4Less Read more ›

Divide your softball team into two groups. Have them line up on the foul line in two lines facing center field. Walk the line of players out, giving approximately 10-15 feet between each player(you can vary this dependent on skill level). It should look like long dotted lines:

Now all the players should be squared up and facing the foul line.
Start the race with ball in the glove of the player standing on the foul line. Yell go! The first player throws the ball to the next player. The ball travels down the line and then is required to come back until the ball is back in the glove of the player that started. The first team back wins. If the player’s drop the ball, they have to throw it back to the player that made the throw and begin from that point. Each player must field and make the relay throw correctly before moving on(again, expectations are by skill level)FatCow
This drill accomplishes a number of things:
- Each player will learn to square her body to the throw coming in.
- The player will learn how to receive the ball and make a balanced turn to throw the ball to the next player.
- Focuses on how to release the ball quickly.
It is very important to teach the concept here of throwing the ball to the glove side of the target player. This will enable the player to rotate her body using the feet and hips to receive the ball. Using this method will also allow the body to be in the correct position to make a relay throw. The power of the throw should come from the rotation of the feet, hips, and shoulders. All while, keeping the throwing hand close to the ear and getting a good snap and arm extension. "Don’t Think … React!"
